September 2025 Newsletter

Hello, and a spectacular September to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. Today's issue gives some reasons why vision improvement may not be for you. Enjoy!

Vision improvement may not be for you
baby removing glasses As a vision educator who wants to help folks learn to see clearly in a relaxed way without depending on glasses, contact lenses or surgery, this may seem like a strange and contradictory topic. Please note that while the goal of clear natural eyesight may appeal to you, understanding that the path forward might not be linear, or immediately produce instant and permanent results of perfect sight at all times, can be a lot harder to accept.

The baby removing his glasses indicates one of the major objections to starting vision improvement, namely learning to do without glasses. People have complained that they spent a lot of money on designer frames, or even that the glasses hide their wrinkles! If you love your glasses, this path is not for you. Yet you don't have to go "cold turkey" and do without glasses completely before you're ready. You do want to get your eyes used to seeing on their own, without artificial help, but only at a pace which feels comfortable.

blurry letters getting clearer Another common objection to starting on a path of seeing more naturally is being unwilling to face some amount of blur, even for brief periods. If you put your glasses on in the morning before you fully open your eyes, only taking them off before you go to sleep at night, you could be in this category. You may have noticed that sometimes you see more clearly than at other times. However without learning that vision without glasses can be clearer at times, and how to maintain that for longer periods, you'll continue to believe it's impossible for your eyes to see better merely by learning how to look.

Maybe you're convinced that your vision problem is hereditary, since everyone in your family got reading glasses when they turned 40. Or maybe all the women and girls were excellent students, and each of them was nearsighted. You don't want to go against your tribe, and anyway what if you're attempting something that's genetically impossible? Study after study has shown that most eye problems develop from bad habits, so it's possible you copied the unhelpful visual habits of your elders when you were young, which doesn't mean you have to keep those habits in place forever, especially if they're not serving you now.

distant view Something I hear often is that vision improvement must be hard work, when most people are already overloaded with career, family and personal commitments and responsibilities. They're expecting this to take lots of extra time and for it to be a struggle, like a strenuous gym workout program. What if it could be easy, even fun? Many vision improvement practices are more like play than work, games to help your eyes and brain function more effectively, with less strain. You could consider going for a walk outside, letting your gaze roam over the scenery instead of staring at a screen, as vision practice.

That lovely distant view above is at the far edge of my neighborhood, and my eyes get the chance to feast here every day when I go for a walk. It is so expansive and freeing to look farther than the walls inside my house, breathing the outdoor air. Most things which are healthy for your body, like eating nutritious food or easy movement or staying hydrated and well rested, are good for the vision too. Don't forget the benefit of a peaceful environment with friendly supportive people, since most eyes don't like looking at angry or judgmental faces. Vision improvement is for you if you want to upgrade your entire life. Socrates said "The unexamined life is not worth living". I'm guessing you want a rich full vibrant life, too, and to be able to see it well.
