October 2025 Newsletter

Hello, and an outstanding October to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. Today's issue is about seeing challenges as problems, or as opportunities. Enjoy!

Great! Another problem!
shooting yourself in the foot In the past week, two of my teachers have said something like, "Oh good! I have a new problem to solve!". They were both being sincere, not sarcastic, looking forward eagerly to the challenge. Most of us are less accepting of bumps in the road which suddenly face us, especially if we caused the trouble ourselves, like the careless guy shooting himself in the foot. It's easy to say we should look at everything as a lesson and a chance to grow, harder to do that in the moment when our plans are suddenly disrupted.

In my early days of vision improvement study, I was willing to go without glasses, and to move to weaker ones, even though my world was blurry. Looking back, I hated how those frames felt trapping my face, so I preferred less clarity over wearing those "eye cages". I would do it differently now, knowing what I know, since I made myself more anxious than I needed to be. I was so eager to be rid of glasses, yet I needed to learn that progress doesn't have to require struggle and straining and hardship.

confusion Understanding and truly believing that I could relax and welcome the view, even if it was blurry at first, was a key step for me. Was I really improving my vision by inviting in the fuzzy images? Well, yes, if I didn't resist the blur, instead slowly scanned over the details I could see. I was often surprised that this simple process allowed more details, and smaller ones, to emerge from what had seemed to be a uniform gray fog. Maybe my habit of trying to do everything as quickly as possible wasn't helping me now.

To transform my attitude about improving my vision, from fixing a huge defect in myself, to merely learning to master an unfamiliar skill, took a while. When I was a child in thick glasses, when hardly any other kids wore them, let alone the strong ones I had, I saw myself as fundamentally flawed. Yes, I was good at other things, but my strained myopic vision seemed like a glaring neon sign that I was broken in a very basic necessary way. What seemed so easy and natural for others was beyond me, or so I believed back then.

little engine that could In most cases, with the exception of vision improvement, I've been an eager student focused on learning and growing. Just like I chose to continue to be optimistic that my eyesight was steadily improving, I also consciously decided to view my vision improvement path as an adventure, not a journey full of torturous struggle and failure. I kept catching myself when I had a negative thought about my eyesight, until "I can see pretty well, and the view is just getting clearer" became my dominant mindset, what I actually believed, which then became my reality.

My mother's frequent worry about "Nancy's bad eyes" throughout my childhood was faulty programming which needed to be rooted out. Since I'd had a long corporate career as a computer programmer, I told myself that re-programming my visual brain and my beliefs about my vision and its potential was a project I was eager to tackle. Seeing the practices with my brain, feelings, and excellent eyes (smile) to improve their skill, rather than feeling like I was trying to train a stubborn mule, felt like fun. Maybe this could even be joyful, like getting better at a new game. Could you see your immediate challenge as an opportunity, rather than a problem?
