Mid-November 2015 Newsletter

Hello, and a marvelous mid-November to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. In the photo above I'm at an energy medicine workshop in the tropics, supporting a healing. I'm trying to stay centered and not burst out laughing, since the woman being worked on is having a big release and starting to giggle. Healing can be a lot of fun!

Today's issue has an article on how looking at details at all distances is good for your visual system. Enjoy!

Vision: Details Near And Far
infant Nancy with Mom in glasses It's becoming a common assumption that computers and electronic hand-held devices are "bad for your eyes". Not really! It's how you use them, and what you do with your eyes and mind during that time. Of course if you spend hours looking at your cell phone a few inches from your face, your body may decide to optimize your near eyesight, at the expense of your distance vision. If you don't use it, you could lose it!

Looking at screens is not the problem, it's that you may not be doing much of anything else. You can prevent "computer vision syndrome" (don't you just love how they're always inventing alarming names for what is simply a bad habit?). Follow the 20-20-20 rule when at the computer: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away, scanning the details there for 20 seconds. Show your brain you want to see in the distance as well as see well close to you.

When I'm away from the computer, whether sitting or moving around, I make a point now of switching my focus periodically from near to far, then back to near. The problem is that when I'm at the computer, especially if I start drifting closer as my eyes get tired, I can lose awareness of everything but the screen right in front of me. I need to remind myself to sit back far enough that I have more periphery to be aware of, and to remember the 20-20-20 rule I mentioned above.

The Maya Angelou quote comes to mind: "When you know better, you do better". I know now I need to use my precious eyes to look at objects at all different distances, to keep this function working well. If you look around you, you might be surprised how much interesting detail surrounds you, at every distance. To see a recent experience of mine when that happened with me, click here.

Have you wondered if my work could help you?
I'm now offering complimentary Discovery Sessions of about 20 minutes, for us to discuss what you're looking for in a coach, and to decide whether you and I feel like a fit. To schedule your Discovery Session, click here.
