Hello, and a more-than-ever Mid-May to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter.
Today's issue is about vision and driving.
Enjoy!
Vision and driving
|
When driving a vehicle, clear accurate vision is essential. We need to see the other cars, how they're moving and signalling (or not!), stay in our lane, and remain
aware of the indicators inside the car too. This can be overwhelming, a source of stress and challenge, or of learning and a chance to practice at gradually improving our skills and
confidence. All these factors are true of a person's vision improvement journey too.
|
One of the personal habits which has caused me the most problems is my tendency to rush, wanting to get past the current situation where I'm uncomfortable as quickly as possible, so I
can relax. This doesn't work when I'm behind the wheel, when I need to be fully present, paying attention to the near and the far, the left and the right. And the view is always changing if I'm moving,
even more than if I'm standing still. This means I definitely have to be alert and remain present, so I can continuously notice anything which is different from a moment ago.
|
When I first started driving a car years ago, I was tense and nervous about most things. As someone with a strong nearsighted pattern since early childhood, close felt safe, say inside the pages
of a book, while distance felt dangerous and scary. Keeping the inside and outside of the windshield clean helps, or my attention might get caught on a smudge there, rather than keeping my focus out on the
road in front of the car. The human eye is more relaxed looking into the distance than it is looking near. This seemed counter-intuitive at first, since I was much more comfortable looking near.
|
With some time, dedicated focus, and repetition, this new pattern finally implanted itself into my belief system, then my habits: relaxing my gaze and my mind to look far helps my visual system perceive more, without having to try so hard to see. Eventually, this started to become automatic. If eyestrain creeps in now, one of my go-to remedies,
other than blinking or closing my eyes or palming, is shifting my gaze into the distance. This could be across the room or out the window when inside, or far down the road when driving.
|
As I continue to improve my vision, my driving experience seems to keep offering opportunities to practice what's been challenging for me in Life, and in seeing. Dealing with poor visibility, like heavy fog, requires that I proceed slowly and carefully,
even if other drivers want to rush ahead. An unexpected car problem, like a flat tire in heavy traffic, or a windshield wiper which breaks during a rainstorm, force me to deal with the immediate situation, and abandon my former plans. A sudden traffic jam or some
road construction can cost me time and put me behind schedule, even though being efficient and organized is a high priority for me.
|
Both seeing well in a relaxed way, and driving a vehicle effectively, require that we be present and focused. Then we can deal properly with whatever arises, whether it be a change in the road conditions or a sudden erratic move by another driver. Rather than viewing driving as
stressful and nerve-wracking, why not look at it as an adventure, knowing you can handle whatever occurs by staying present, calm, and attentive? And please don't forget to thank your eyes for helping to get you safely where you need to go.
Undoing my chronic feeling of urgency, which led to hurrying through experiences without being fully present, has been foundational in improving my vision. Driving is a great place to practice being calmer and more "zen". To read about vision and rushing,
