Mid-June 2025 Newsletter
Hello, and a memorable jumping Mid-June to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter.
Today's issue is about how vision is more than acuity.
Enjoy!
Vision is more than acuity
|
When asked about the status of our eyesight, many of us only focus on how clearly we can see, like an eye doctor basing his entire assessment of your visual health
on how well you can read the eye chart. There is no discussion of how moist and mobile your eyes are, how frequently you're blinking, how well you can see in
varying levels of light and darkness, or whether your two eyes work correctly together, at all distances.
|
When I first started dedicating myself to improving my eyesight, which for many years had been caged behind a -10 prescription in thick eyeglasses or thick hard contacts, I didn't use
the eye chart. It was too discouraging to realize how limited my eyesight was. Also, there were plenty of painful memories of visiting the eye doctor, failing to read
the eye chart well enough, and being given an even stronger prescription.
|
Instead of continuing to remind myself how poor my acuity was by struggling with the eye chart, trying to force the letters into clarity which just made them blurrier, I focused on what I could see well.
Even with my strong distance correction, with no glasses I could read with no strain, if I held the book at 8 inches or so. When I dropped something small I was able to find it right away, rather than feeling like it was
lost for good. Depth in the environment began to pop out at me more without my glasses, noticing which branch of a tree was closer, or noticing the 3D effect of air conditioners projecting out from houses.
|
An early vision teacher of mine, Peter Grunwald of
Eyebody
fame, told us practicing seeing depth is essential for myopes, so I did a lot of this, noticing the cloud mountains overhead when walking outdoors, seeing the depth get richer ad deeper. I felt immersed in the
environment, not like a detached observer viewing it from behind my glasses. Colors were also richer and more distinct without my glasses, the different subtle shades of green in the lawn and shrubs and trees more obvious.
My vision improvement studies had taught me glasses mute depth and dull color, and now I could see that for myself.
|
The cone cells in our retina, which is the light-sensitive part of the back of the eye allowing us to see, process color and also clarity. By noticing and appreciating color, I told myself I was also exercising my
"clarity muscles", even though I wasn't ready to tackle the dreaded eye chart quite yet. As I played with "how many yellow things can I see around me?", then looking for red items, or another color, it felt like
encouraging my eyes to connect to the surroundings more completely, to actually look and curiously inspect, not just glance and grab at the images.

Socrates wrote "The unexamined life is not worth living". This doesn't just refer to self-reflection and introspection, it's about looking at what is around you too, about seeing and fully taking in the visual information.
Please appreciate the treasure of visual delights which surround you, the textures and nuances, the shadings and shapes and motion. Our visual system is meant to bring us information, and also deep pleasure and delight. Let yourself enjoy
whatever you see, whether it's perfectly crisp and clear, or soft muted colors with blurred edges, like an exquisite impressionist painting.
