Mid-July 2025 Newsletter

Hello, and a more-than-ever juicy Mid-July to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. Today's issue is about vision identities. Enjoy!

What is your vision identity?
man wearing thick glasses As someone who grew up hearing that I had "bad eyes" and wearing ever-stronger glasses, my vision identity was Nancy Nearsighted. I was good at other things, but eyesight was not my gift, as a male client told me once about himself. Yes, negative self-talk can constantly pull our spirits downward. However when circumstances around you, and other people's comments, seem to reinforce that negativity, it can be difficult to counteract it.

A big mindset change for me when I started vision improvement was to notice, then start changing, how I talked to myself about my eyesight. It was quite disheartening to keep thinking "Oh I can't see that far", often before I even looked! Instead, saying to myself "let me see what I can see over there", with a curious exploring attitude, led my attention outward into the environment to investigate. When I look into what seems like a blurry scene, I can usually spot a few large details, which leads me to look deeper, rather than looking away and giving up. Then continuing to look often helps me to see more, and smaller, details.

man lifting his glasses to squint at his phone A visually confident attitude of "I can do this!" pulls us forward to learn and to want to accomplish even more. Similarly to a child learning to crawl, then stand and walk, then run, while improving our vision we need to take it a step at a time. Yes, sometimes we backslide or get discouraged. Yet holding on to the identity of someone who sees pretty well most of the time, and is learning to see even better, will energize us for the next part of the trip ahead.

About energy and motivation, for vision improvement or anything else, a positive confident attitude of believing in oneself goes a long way. Of course we need to find teachers, coaches, and/or guides who can instruct us and be examples or role models of what we hope to become. And eventually we want to embody that inner teacher and be the resource for ourselves, our own cheerleader and best friend who will always believe in us and kindly coax us forward.

eagle The way I thought of myself, since I was a young child, was as someone who worked hard, and did what was needed to complete tasks and assignments, whether that was at home, in school, or with personal goals I had set. My identity was tied to my accomplishments, knowing I would get things done no matter how I felt, with little focus on connecting with others. This is consistent with my wearing glasses and contacts for years, which let us, sometimes force us, to see clearly enough to function, even when we're straining and uncomfortable.

My vision identity now is of Noticing Nancy, paying attention to the world around me, including to other people in my circle, and also to myself and how I'm feeling. It's distressing to admit how much I resisted noticing in the past, like a toddler declaring "I won't!". A big part of vision improvement is about awareness. If someone isn't aware they're straining, maybe because it's so habitual, or is tuned-out to how uncomfortable they are in body or mind, it's unlikely that will change. Is your vision identity consistent with the way you want to see yourself, and be seen by others?
