Mid-January 2026 Newsletter

Hello, and a magical mid-January to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. Today's issue is about how vision improvement may require some unlearning. Enjoy!

Vision improvement is also unlearning
shooting yourself in the foot People often start vision improvement eager to learn the mysterious "vision exercises" which will help their eyesight recover from years, maybe decades, of bad habits and abuse. First, the practices we teach aren't exercises as much as healthier habits. This could be as simple as sitting up straight instead of slouching, so your blood and energy flows all the way up to your brain and eyes without being restricted. Like remembering not to slouch, these practices are often about learning what not to do to help your eyes function better.

After the first significant snow of the season a month ago, which was several inches of a wet heavy slushy mess as the snow turned to rain, folks were complaining about a sore back from shoveling, or were frantically trying to find someone new to plow their driveway since their previous guy had retired. If you live here in the northeast US, dealing with this sort of weather is part of the package. My vision loved being outdoors in the fresh air even though I was getting wet, waving to the man clearing the road up above as I shoveled my own driveway and sidewalk. A good vision habit is to find something positive about what you have to look at, whatever it is.

sun on snow Healthy eyesight involves connecting to your environment visually, no matter what is happening, and ideally finding something you like seeing, or want to explore further. That dim wet chilly day wasn't as picturesque as when the sun is shining on newly fallen snow, like in the photo. However my eyes did appreciate how much light the fresh snow reflected in the gloom, and the sharp contrast between the pristine snow against the black asphalt pavement being slowly exposed by my shovel.

Attitude plays a strong central role in vision improvement, and in many other forms of healing. Think of how a young child wakes up, eager to engage with the new day, no matter what the weather. Our interest in exploring, investigating, and connecting with the environment around us will drive our looking. If we're resisting seeing something, or rushing which can lead us to look but not really take in the view, we might miss important or fascinating sights. Looking with interest and curiosity, like a scientist or detective, surprisingly can let us see more, just because we're involved in the process with our attention, not distracted with our mind on something else which is not here right now.

practice leads to improvement Vision, like our other senses, can only happen in the present. You can't see or hear something which happened an hour ago, or will happen an hour from now, though you can remember or imagine it. But that's not open-eyed right-now eyesight, it's memory or visualizing. A common unhelpful habit which can get in the way of clear vision is not being present. Vision is physical as well as energetic. Therefore many vision practices lead you into the body, to focus on breath and easy movement. This reduces over-thinking, and naturally heightens awareness of the eye/mind/body connection which we want.

If you're not connected within yourself, your emotional awareness and your gut feelings about what your senses are bringing in, your ability to connect to the environment visually or otherwise will be limited. If you've described yourself, or others have described you, as "scattered" or "frazzled" or even "spread too thin", maybe it's time to slow down a bit and let yourself come fully back to your home in the body. Not being "home" like this is one of the most common habits we need to unlearn, and it's easy to correct. Take a deep slow breath, feel your feet on the floor, then let your eyes gratefully receive what is before them.
