Mid-February 2026 Newsletter
Hello, and a Mind-blowing Mid-February to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter.
Today's issue is on how you feel about your eyes.
Enjoy!
How do you feel about your eyes?
|
If you'd asked me when I was a child how I felt about my eyes, the question would have probably confused me. My eyes were working harder and harder to see what was needed back then, both in
school and at home, though I had no awareness of how they were straining behind my ever-thicker glasses. Eyestrain was so familiar to me, it seemed normal. If I could see well enough, my eyes
were good enough, like any tool that did what it was designed to do.
|
The above is a recent photo of one of my eyes, which I like to think shows its awareness and sensitivity. Once in a vision workshop, the teacher had us look in a mirror at each eye separately, to see how we felt about
that eye, and how it seemed to feel about us. The differences between the 2 eyes of some students were startling, one eye appearing friendly and the other suspicious, or one eye seeming outgoing and open while the other looked scared. You might want to experiment with this too,
and see what it tells you about yourself.
|
If the eyes are the windows to the soul, is the personality which appears in our eyes how we are perceived by others? I'm not the first to note the connection between the eye, and "the I", or our essence.
A vision teacher in Europe invites people to have conversations with their eyes, to determine better what they need to thrive. Common responses have been more rest or appreciation (rather than pressure to perform)
or more fun things to look at. Might this be a reflection of what the entire person needs, maybe more joy, or some time to play?
|
The complaints I've heard from folks about their eyes range from appearance to functioning to pain. Someone considers her precious eyes "small and squinty", someone else likes her glasses "because they hide the bags and dark circles under my eyes".
I doubt these folks' visual systems like this kind of self-talk! As a child with my eyes trapped behind thick glasses, I rarely looked in a mirror. Now when I catch a glimpse of my eyes without those lenses and frames separating me from the
environment, I smile and thank them for all they're doing.
|
Are you grateful for your eyes and the magical gift of human vision they let you receive? When children who are doing their best are pushed too hard to do even more, they may rebel or resist. So it should be no surprise that when we
regularly abuse or neglect our eyes, visual pain or blur can be the outcome. As with children, relaxing, play, or some kind of comfort or support can go a long way. To return to the idea of talking with your eyes mentioned earlier,
you might consider asking if they're getting the care they need from you, before you demand better performance from them.
|
Think of how you look at a person or pet you love deeply. Your eyes are probably shining with affection and caring. Now think of looking at your own two eyes in the bathroom mirror that way. If this feels like too much of a stretch,
maybe you can take a step toward it by beaming out friendship and genuine appreciation, then feeling your eyes looking back at you with affection. Self-care isn't the same as selfishness. Cherish your precious eyes and the human sight
they deliver to you, and treat them like the invaluable friends and partners they are.
