What are you chasing?

When I was younger I was often in a frantic rushing state, trying to accomplish more than was comfortable, and sometimes wasn't even humanly possible. I pushed myself relentlessly, and
pushed my eyes and my vision too. As a child if I wasn't doing chores around the house, or my schoolwork, say if I was reading a book of stories for pleasure, my father would jokingly ask "What are you, a Lady of Leisure?".
This did not sound like a good thing to be!

To be rushing and trying too hard at most things might have served me as a child, at least pacifying my parents and teachers and bosses. I'm not so sure now that it served me. This approach certainly isn't useful to me now
as an adult, and is actually harmful if I'm "chasing" vision improvement. One of the fundamental principles of eye health, and most other forms of body, mental, and emotional health, is relaxation. We want to receive the good coming
our way, rather than push ourselves and grasp at the clarity which seems so elusive.

Remember Yoda, who said "there is no try, only do"?. Regarding visual health, do invite and welcome the images coming your way. Do not try hard to see, forcing and straining at what should be a natural process.
Instead allow yourself to see, as simply and naturally as you hear or taste. Undue effort will only throw sand in the gears of this delicate mechanism, like trying to make a flower bloom faster than Nature intends.

The man running endlessly on the human-sized hamster wheel may be chasing a promotion at work, or a business deal with a difficult client, or something else we aren't aware of. I've chased good grades in my classes, a fitter stronger body in the gym,
and relationships where I was providing the bulk of the energy and resources. This chasing feeling isn't fun, and ultimately doesn't work, which I finally discovered when I approached vision improvement that way.

The harder I chased clearer vision, the more elusive it seemed. When I understood that a fundamental principle of vision improvement is relaxation, I tried to make myself relax, which seems laughable now. It's like telling someone sobbing
with grief, or shaking with fear, "Oh, you're OK" when the upset person is clearly not OK. I could not tell my body, mind, or eyes that they were relaxed, like issuing a royal decree, if I did not feel relaxed. I had to learn what I needed
to provide for myself so the relaxation would be able to emerge.

Body sensations can alert us to an elevated state of tension, if we pay attention to them and are not "all in our head". Are we starting to breathe faster and more shallowly? Do we feel a slight tension headache arising, or an unsettled stomach? Ideally
(when we're aware) these warning signals are like the red light on the dashboard, indicating we're moving away from a relaxed state of being. Right then is the time to take some action to lower our stress, not to ignore it and keep on pushing and chasing
whatever we think the prize is. What if relaxation and peace, and clearer sight, want to come toward us? Just let them in!
