January 2022 Newsletter

Hello, and a juicy January to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. Today's issue is about limiting ourselves unnecessarily. Enjoy!

Are you limiting yourself?
man trapped in a jar The man in the jar is clearly trapped and restricted. However sometimes the boundaries holding us back are not this obvious. I'm sure you've heard "Oh, no, I'm too old" or "With my finances, I could never afford to do that" or "My husband (or kids) won't let me" from friends or relatives. Maybe you've even said this yourself. Does your friend or relative realize this is the jar they're using to restrict themselves? Do you?

When I was a small child in thick glasses years ago, I didn't at first understand how they interfered with my life. Wearing glasses was just the way things were. My mother wore glasses too, though hers weren't as strong as mine. As an older child climbing trees and running around outdoors, it was annoying how often my glasses fell off if I hung upside down on the monkey bars. Or they got smeared with raindrops or snowflakes, or fogged up in the cold, keeping me from seeing much at all. This did indeed make me feel limited, even defective. Kids without glasses didn't have to deal with this!

Alan Alda assumtions quote From a child or teen viewpoint, it honestly never occurred to me to try to function without my glasses. I assumed I wouldn't be able to see, and didn't challenge that belief, considering it a fact. I see now how this limited me. When I first took off my -10 hard contact lenses in my 40s, to function with a weaker prescription, and to see if I could do anything with no correction at all, it felt daring and scary. It was also exciting. If I could do even simple things like go for a walk with no glasses or contacts, maybe I wasn't as limited as I'd thought.

Eleanor Roosevelt is remembered for this quote: "You must do the thing you think you cannot do". When I was waiting for a fairy godmother or personal angel to show up and "fix my eyes" (which had nothing wrong with them), I did not know there was anything I could do differently to help myself. I assumed (there's that dangerous word again) I just had to follow the eye doctor's advice to wear an ever-stronger correction. When I tried to go without my contacts or glasses, it felt risky and dangerous, like I was breaking the rules. And it also felt incredibly freeing.

transforming can't to can Several years ago I was having a meal in a NYC restaurant with some friends. The restrooms were on a lower level, so we had to descend a long steep open staircase to get to them. When I walked down these steps, I encountered a woman slowly and tentatively coming up, clinging tightly to the railing with both hands like it was a lifeline. She seemed terrified, yet determined. I looked at her questioningly, wondering if she was OK. She told me, apologetically, that she was deathly afraid of heights. I gave her all the reassurance and congratulations I could muster, pouring out my admiration for her resolve to face her fears. I still remember her as a shining example of "Feel the fear, and do it anyway".

If you look back at your life, you'll probably find something you did which frightened you at first, yet led to a great sense of personal satisfaction afterward. Gradually improving my eyesight, and my visual confidence, has been like that for me. Let's let 2022 be the year that we don't let unreasonable fears hold us back from the richest fullest life we can handle. To quote Benjamin Franklin, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained!".
