February 2026 Newsletter

Hello, and a freeing February to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. Today's issue is about how glasses may be hiding the real you. Enjoy!

Are those glasses hiding the real you?
thick glasses When I was a child in ever-thicker eyeglasses, I sometimes felt like their purpose was to turn me into Super Student, productive at all things in the classroom, with little or no room for anything else. My active energetic rope-climbing or running or cartwheeling (when my glasses often fell off) didn't matter to my elementary teachers, though. Nor did my extreme introversion, my preference for being alone with a book over playing with other children. I needed social interaction practice with my peers back then more than anyone realized.

"You can't hit someone with glasses on" we're taught. Is this (false) protection, or deceiving the wearer into thinking he's not vulnerable? Most of us don't want to be the bully, kicking sand in the weakling's face, but we definitely don't want to be the wimpy weakling! As a youngster it did feel like my glasses separated me from scary or intrusive others, and not only as a physical barrier. Since it wasn't as easy for others to see into my "eyes under glass" and read my feelings, it seemed like that kept me safer.

baby removing his/her glasses The baby removing his glasses instinctively knows they're a barrier keeping out the environment, and also keeping others from getting in too deeply. He wants to be able to fully connect with whatever or whomever he's seeing. He's young enough to still want to be exactly who he is, without masking or muting his true self, which eyeglasses can often do. When I see photos of myself as a young girl, already in strong glasses, looking so serious and studious, I wonder "didn't I ever get to cut loose, be silly, and just play?".

One big problem with a rigid identity like Top Student is that it's limiting you to just that role, not leaving room for you to expand into anything different. This reminds me of how the frames of your glasses trap your gaze in that restricted vista, punishing you with blur if you dare to look outside of the frames, or away from the optical center of the lenses where the the vision is sharpest. Could you possibly excel at music, or art, or sports, as well as at academics? Why not?

creating stairs then clibing them Knowledge or a skill set ought to grow and expand over time, not be stuck and static and never changing. Looking outside of your immediate area of focus can often shed more light on that same issue, when obsessing over it endlessly won't yield any additional clarity. It's common knowledge that solutions can arise when you're away from the problem, say while taking a shower. Your problem-solving brain is still working on this in the background, while your conscious attention is elsewhere.

What if the "real you" is more than you've ever thought? I've always recoiled from the question "what do you do?", as if my career or job is all there is to me. How can anyone with a shred of self-awareness describe their identity to someone else in a sound bite? At different times we may wish to highlight or explore different skills or interests. Please don't limit yourself, or your outlook, to the safe and comfortable. Look outside of those frames! Life is full of possibilities just waiting to be explored. Maybe you could be a performer, or speaker, or sculptor or dancer. Why not?
