February 2019 Newsletter

Hello, and a fantastic February to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. Today's issue is about being happy, how it can help you be healthier, and a few suggestions for finding pleasure in the ordinary. Enjoy!

Are you happy most of the time?
womsn dreaming Have you ever noticed that if you "get up on the wrong side of the bed", in a grumpy mood, things seem to go downhill from there? You stub your toe, spill something in the kitchen making a hasty breakfast, take time you don't have to clean up the mess, and then you're late to work!

On the other hand when you wake up optimistic, thinking for no obvious reason "It's going to be a great day!", it usually is. Do we really have that much control over our reality? It does seem that happy people draw more to themselves to be happy about, as the Law Of Attraction predicts. And I don't think it's quite that simple.

Our house is not burning down, nor is a hungry tiger chasing us. Realizing our life is not in immediate danger can relax us enough to let us take a deep breath, then start methodically (rather than frantically) looking for solutions.

Keeping our so-called problems in perspective helps, too. What is going right in your life? Even if you had an unexpected car repair, you have the money to pay for it, and you and your family are healthy. Things could be a lot worse! As a child, a problem like a broken toy can seem like the end of our (small) world. As an adult, we can back away a bit and look at the situation with perspective, seeing the bigger and often happier picture.

friends sharing an umbrella The reason I wrote "so-called problems" above is because with hindsight, what initially seemed like a difficulty or obstacle could lead to a happy outcome. Maybe getting let go from that job of drudgery, where you weren't appreciated for all the long hours you put in, freed you to start your own business. Or maybe that serious illness forced you to finally focus on changing the habits which led to your being sick, and by doing so you're now healthier than ever. Can you see a blessing in disguise in your own situation?

Many teachings say events don't happen to you, they happen for you. In other words, you needed to be re-directed to change your dead-end course, or to meet that stranger while you're waiting for the tow truck, before the next chapter in your life can unfold. Maybe you don't see the gift underneath the problem yet, but just sharing your troubles with a sympathetic friend can bring comfort, or even useful advice, which are gifts in themselves. Life is too short to remain unhappy! Look for the good, and keep moving toward it.
