April 2026 Newsletter
Hello, and an astounding April to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter.
Today's issue is about blur interpretation.
Enjoy!
What is blur interpretation?
|
If you've been around the natural vision improvement community for a while, you may have heard the term "blur interpretation", which I believe was
originally used by the traditional eye care industry, like optometrists and ophthalmologists, to dismiss and explain away a brief improvement in someone's
eyesight, who they believed shouldn't be able to see that clearly. My reaction to this is that if I can see something better than usual, I don't care what you call it!
|
A key concept underlying vision improvement is that our vision varies from moment to moment, with the lighting conditions, how tired or rested we are, how well-nourished
and hydrated, and many other factors. It's misleading to think your eyeglasses prescription defines how well you see all the time. Haven't you noticed that the same glasses can be fine
one day or hour, and not much help in seeing clearly at other times? Just like our blood pressure or heart rate or breathing rate can change during different activities, so can the
clarity of our vision.
|
Please don't passively hand over your seeing to your glasses, as if you don't have to do anything to interpret the images facing you, thinking that the glasses
will do all of the necessary visual processing. Get curious: what's going on with you emotionally when your eyesight seems suddenly a lot clearer than usual, or a lot more blurry?
Where is your attention, on what you're looking at, or are you distracted with your mind mostly on something else?
|
Vision and attention are closely intertwined. This is true for both clear vision and blurry vision. I like to re-frame "blur interpretation" to something positive, by giving my full
attention to a scene or object which appears blurry at first glance, then curiously inspecting it for areas of greater clarity. It never ceases to amaze me how if I just keep
looking, details start to emerge, and examining those with interest leads to more and sharper detail.
|
Most people who have started on a vision improvement path have experienced "clear flashes". These are short periods of sharper eyesight before their usual level of blur returns. Often
folks dismiss these as "just a fluke", or grab at them urgently, almost desperate for that clarity which has seemed so elusive. Neither of these is a helpful approach. Dismissing clear sight is programming yourself
with a negative message, reinforcing "I can't possibly see that well". This belief will discourage improvement from continuing.
|
Forcefully or desperately reaching for any sudden clarity, like a drowning person clutching at a lifeline, can chase it away too. Just notice and appreciate. Your visual brain is re-calibrating, learning how to see better.
As you welcome and accept the flashes of clearer sight, they'll eventually become more frequent, and will last longer. When you interpret that initial blur to reveal images that make sense, then are able to see sharper detail,
your vision is connecting more successfully with reality. Enjoy and appreciate seeing the world as only your visual system can receive it.
